Privacy policy

Last updated 5 August 2026

Summary

Budkin collects no data about you. There is no Budkin account, no Budkin server, and no analytics, advertising, tracking or crash-reporting code in the app.

What you record stays on your phone. If you connect Budkin to a Baby Buddy server, it is sent to that server and nowhere else. That server is operated by you, or by someone you chose. The developer has no copy of your data and no way to access it.

1. Who this policy is from

Budkin is an Android app published by Karel Lievens, an individual developer, under the package name dev.karellievens.budkin. This policy covers that app.

Questions about privacy or about this policy: [email protected].

2. What Budkin collects about you

No data at all. The developer operates no server that the app talks to, receives no data from the app, and runs no account system.

Specifically, the app contains none of the following:

  • No analytics or usage measurement of any kind.
  • No advertising, ad identifiers, or ad networks.
  • No crash or error reporting service.
  • No attribution, install-referrer or marketing SDKs.
  • No fingerprinting, and no tracking across apps or websites.
  • No sale or sharing of personal information with anyone.

3. What is stored on your device

Budkin keeps a full local copy of your data so it stays usable without a network connection. This lives in the app's private storage, which other apps on the device cannot read.

What Where it is kept
Children's names, birth dates and photos App storage on the device
Entries: feeds, sleep, diapers, pumping, tummy time, baths, temperature, medication, notes, milestones App storage on the device
Measurements, growth records and treatment schedules App storage on the device
Running timers and the offline queue of unsent changes App storage on the device
Preferences: theme, units, the list of saved server addresses App storage on the device
Your server's address and access token The Android Keystore, the operating system's encrypted credential store

Credentials are stored separately from everything else. They go through the system keystore rather than ordinary app storage, so the operating system encrypts them at rest.

4. Where your data goes

Local mode

If you use Budkin without connecting a server, your data never leaves the device. The app makes no network requests for your content at all. No account is required and none is created.

Connected to a Baby Buddy server

If you enter the address of a Baby Buddy server, Budkin sends your entries to that address so they sync across your devices. That address is the only destination your data is ever sent to.

That server is not operated by the developer of Budkin. It is run by you, or by whoever you chose to host it. How data is stored, secured, backed up and retained there is governed by whoever runs it, not by this policy. If you did not set the server up yourself, ask the person who did what they do with it.

Plain HTTP connections

Budkin permits unencrypted http:// connections, because many people run Baby Buddy on a home network where certificates are impractical. Traffic to such a server is not encrypted in transit and could be read by others on the same network.

On a home network this is usually fine. If your server is reachable over the internet, use https://.

5. Permissions the app asks for

  • Photo library and camera. Optional, and used only when you choose to set a child's picture. The photo stays on the device, and is uploaded to your own server only if you have connected one. No photo is sent anywhere else.
  • Notifications. Used for running timers and medication reminders. Every notification is scheduled locally on the device. Budkin has no push notification service, registers no push token, and cannot receive a message from the developer or anyone else.
  • Network access. Used only to reach the Baby Buddy server address you entered. Not used in Local mode.

6. Children's data

Budkin records information about a child, including feeding, sleep, diapers, growth and medication. Some of that is health-related. It is entered by a parent or carer, who is the intended user of the app. Budkin is designed for adults and is not directed at children.

This data is treated exactly like everything else described above: it stays on your device, and goes to your own server if you connect one. It is never transmitted to the developer, and never shared with, sold to or disclosed to any third party.

7. Google Play

Budkin is distributed through Google Play. Google collects its own data on app distribution, installation and purchases. This happens independently of the app and outside the developer's control. It is covered by Google's privacy policy.

Google provides the developer with aggregate, anonymised statistics such as install counts and crash summaries. These come from Google's own platform instrumentation, not from any code inside Budkin, and they do not identify individual users.

8. Deleting your data

On the device: uninstalling Budkin removes everything it stored, including the local copy of your entries and the credentials in the keystore. You can also use Android's Clear storage option in the app's system settings.

On your server: data synced to your Baby Buddy instance lives there until you remove it. Because that server is yours, deletion is done through it. The developer cannot delete, access or retrieve anything on it.

There is no request to make of the developer to have your data erased, since the developer holds none of it.

9. Your rights

Data protection law, including the GDPR, gives you rights of access, correction, erasure and portability over personal data held about you. These rights are exercised against whoever holds the data. For Budkin that is you: the data is on your device and on your server, under your control, and already fully accessible and exportable through Baby Buddy itself.

The developer holds none of your data and is therefore not a controller or processor of it. You are welcome to write to [email protected] with any question about how the app handles data.

10. Changes to this policy

If the app's data handling changes, this page changes with it and the date at the top is updated. Material changes will also be noted in the app's release notes on Google Play. This policy will remain available at this address.

11. Not affiliated with Baby Buddy

Budkin is an unofficial, independently built client for Baby Buddy, an open-source project licensed under BSD-2-Clause. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the Baby Buddy project or its maintainers, who bear no responsibility for this app.
